How to Prevent Blocked Drains in Your Home
Prevention is always better than cure when it comes to drainage. Simple changes to your daily habits can significantly reduce the risk of blockages and the need for emergency call-outs.
Kitchen Drains
Never pour cooking fat, oil or grease down the sink. These solidify in the pipes and create stubborn blockages over time. Scrape plates into the bin before washing and use a sink strainer to catch food particles.
Bathroom Drains
Hair is the number one cause of bathroom drain blockages. Use a drain guard over your shower and bath plug holes. Clean these regularly to prevent build-up.
Toilets
Only flush toilet paper and human waste. Items like wet wipes (even those labelled “flushable”), cotton buds and sanitary products should always go in the bin.
Outside Drains
Keep external drain covers clear of leaves and debris. If you have trees near your drainage runs, consider periodic root cutting to prevent ingress.
Regular Maintenance
A professional drain clean every 12-18 months can prevent problems before they start. This is especially important for older properties with ageing pipework.
