Asbestos contamination drainage

Drainage works involving asbestos-containing materials, with licensed asbestos contractors required.

Asbestos contamination drainage work involves drainage repairs or emergency response where asbestos-containing materials (ACM) are present. ACM was widely used in pre-2000 drainage systems including asbestos cement pipes for surface water and rainwater drainage, and in some chamber covers. Across Greater London, ACM drainage is most often encountered in 1950s to 1970s estate properties in outer boroughs. Before any works, an asbestos survey should be commissioned to identify materials present, and a licensed asbestos contractor engaged for removal under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. The service includes survey, risk assessment, controlled removal or repair, air monitoring during works, and a written clearance report. Why this matters: disturbing ACM without controls releases fibres causing serious health risks. Buildings insurance may cover ACM drainage work under specific cover, with limits often applying.
