Ball valve

Quarter-turn valve using a perforated ball to control or shut off the flow of water.

A ball valve is a quarter-turn isolation valve in which a perforated ball is rotated within the body of the valve to control or shut off the flow of water. UK ball valves are manufactured to BS EN 13828 and BS EN ISO 17292 and are commonly used as isolation valves on cold and hot water systems, heating circuits and gas installations. The 90 degree lever action allows quick operation in an emergency. Brass ball valves are widely used in plumbing while DZR brass and bronze versions resist dezincification in aggressive water conditions, which can be a factor in some parts of Greater London. Ball valves are generally reliable but should not be left partially open for prolonged periods because uneven wear of the ball seats can shorten their working life.
