BS 8580 is a British Standard giving guidance on the risk assessment of water systems for the control of legionellosis, the family of diseases including Legionnaires' disease caused by Legionella bacteria. The standard supports duty holders in meeting their responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and HSE Approved Code of Practice L8. It is widely applied across UK commercial premises, including offices, healthcare facilities and residential blocks across Greater London. While Legionella is primarily a water supply issue rather than a drainage one, drainage works are relevant where dead legs, water storage tanks and showers are altered during plumbing refurbishment. Practical implications include the need for a written risk assessment and management plan. The standard is published in two parts, with BS 8580-1:2019 covering risk assessment of hot and cold water systems.
