A bio enzyme drain cleaning chemical uses cultured bacteria and enzymes to break down fats, oils, grease and other organic matter inside pipework. The product is added regularly, usually overnight, allowing the bacteria to colonise the pipe wall and digest deposits. Bio enzyme treatments are appropriate as preventative maintenance on grease traps, kitchen waste pipes and macerator units, particularly in London restaurants and shared kitchens with heavy fat loading. They are not a fast-acting unblocker and will not clear an established hard blockage, where mechanical or jetting intervention is required. The products are typically biodegradable and have a low hazard rating under COSHH 2002, although operators should still follow the safety data sheet and the discharge limits set by Thames Water under any trade effluent consent in force.
