Drain heater (frost protection)

Heated element or tape used to prevent freezing in drainage pipework.

A drain heater is an electrical trace heating tape or self-regulating cable used to prevent freezing in exposed external drainage pipework during cold weather. The cable is wrapped around the pipe and covered with thermal insulation, with a thermostat switching the heater on at temperatures below 4 degrees Celsius. Drain heaters are most often used on basement light wells, exposed external waste runs and unheated outbuildings in London properties that experience prolonged cold. Selection should follow the manufacturer's design guide and the cable should be installed in accordance with BS EN IEC 60079 where applicable and BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations). A residual current device must be fitted, and electrical work should be carried out by a NICEIC or NAPIT registered contractor.
