Drain mice infestation

Mice using drains and waste pipes as a route between properties and the outside.

Drain mice infestations are less commonly recognised than rat issues but can occur where defective drain pipes or wide gaps around service entries allow house mice to travel between properties, voids and the outside. Common entry points include unsealed redundant waste pipes, broken gullies, defective rodent stops at the boundary and gaps around service pipes passing through floor slabs. In terraced housing across London, shared drainage runs and party walls can allow mice to spread between adjacent flats. Engineers usually identify the route by carrying out a CCTV drain survey and inspecting visible pipework. Sealing of redundant connections, repair of defective fittings under BS EN ISO 11296 and installation of proprietary rodent stops typically addresses the access route. Eradication itself is handled by a pest control contractor working alongside the drainage engineer.
