Gurgling drain

Bubbling or glugging noise from a drain or fitting caused by air being drawn through traps.

A gurgling drain produces a distinctive bubbling or glugging noise as water passes through a fitting, caused by air being drawn through the trap water seal or pushed back up the pipe. The most common reason is a partial blockage downstream that restricts flow, allowing air pockets to form and escape erratically. A blocked or obstructed soil vent pipe can also create negative pressure that pulls water out of traps, generating the same sound. Building Regulations Part H1 requires adequate ventilation of drainage systems to prevent siphonage and resulting odours. Engineers usually address common causes by checking the vent terminal for obstructions, clearing the trap and inspecting the main drain run. If the noise persists after rodding, a CCTV drain survey can identify the precise location of the underlying restriction.
