A root cutter nozzle is a specialist jetter head fitted with chains, blades or a rotating cutting cage that shreds tree roots inside the pipe while jets clear the debris downstream. The nozzle is propelled by rear jets and either spins under jet reaction or by a small water-driven motor. Root cutter nozzles are widely used on London clay drains affected by sycamore and lime root ingress, particularly in Camden and Haringey gardens. Operators must inspect the chain or blades before each use, as detached components can become lodged in the pipe. Working pressure should be selected to suit the host pipe condition in accordance with the Water Jetting Association Code of Practice. A follow-up patch or lining repair is required to address the entry point and prevent regrowth.
