A service valve is a small isolation valve installed close to an individual appliance or fitting, allowing maintenance or replacement without draining down the whole system. UK service valves follow BS 1010 and are commonly fitted on the supply pipes to toilets, basins, washing machines, dishwashers and combination boilers. They are usually operated with a screwdriver or by a small lever and remain closed until the next service is needed. Service valves are now widely required by water companies and best practice guidance in line with the Water Supply Fittings Regulations 1999. Their absence in older London properties means that a leaking fill valve or tap can require shutting off the main stop tap to repair, adding inconvenience and risk. Fitting service valves during refurbishment is a worthwhile upgrade.
