Surface water drain cleaning is the periodic high-pressure jetting and vacuum recovery of pipes carrying rainwater run-off from roofs, gutters, downpipes, paving and gullies. Typical obstructions include silt, moss, leaf debris and decayed organic matter, which build up most quickly in autumn and after dry summers when rainfall flushes loose material into the system. Engineers usually access the system at rodding eyes, inspection chambers or downpipe entries and work back through the network. The Water Jetting Association code of practice and the WRc Sewer Cleaning Manual provide the relevant industry guidance. Cleaning addresses common causes of garden flooding and damp on lower walls, but does not repair cracked pipes or failed soakaways, which require separate diagnosis and works.
