Water backup (overflow from fixture)

Wastewater backing up out of a sink, bath or toilet due to drain blockage.

A water backup occurs when a blockage in the drain forces wastewater to rise back up through fittings, appearing as dirty water in a sink, shower tray or toilet pan. The pattern of overflow often reveals where the blockage lies. If only one fitting is affected, the issue is usually local to its branch pipe, but if water rises through the lowest fitting in the property when another is used, the obstruction is downstream in the main drain. In older London properties with combined drains, heavy rainfall can also cause surcharging in the sewer that backs up internally. Building Regulations Part H1 requires anti-flood devices on low-level fittings at risk of surcharge. Engineers usually address common causes by clearing the line through the nearest access point and recommending a CCTV survey for recurring incidents.
