BS EN 1671 (vacuum sewerage)

European Standard for the design and construction of vacuum sewerage systems outside buildings.

BS EN 1671 is the UK and European Standard for the design and construction of vacuum sewerage systems outside buildings, in which sewage is conveyed under negative pressure through small diameter pipes to a central collection point. The technique is relatively rare in Greater London but is occasionally specified on sites where gravity drainage is impractical, such as low-lying redevelopments and certain commercial campuses. The standard sets out design principles, pipe materials, valve stations and operational considerations. Practical implications for designers and operators include the need for specialist maintenance arrangements and reliable power supplies. The standard is read in conjunction with BS EN 752 for general drainage and with manufacturer-specific documentation for proprietary systems. The formal reference is BS EN 1671:1997 as amended. Vacuum sewerage is more commonly encountered in continental European projects than in typical UK domestic drainage.
