Cement-lined pipe describes a ferrous pipe, typically ductile or cast iron, with a centrifugally applied cement mortar lining on the internal surface to protect the steel from corrosion. The lining is widely specified for water mains and pumped sewerage rising mains under BS EN 545 and BS EN 598, providing service lives in excess of 100 years where installed correctly. The lined surface presents a smooth pale grey bore on CCTV inspection, distinct from the textured surface of unlined ductile iron. In Greater London the material is regularly encountered on Thames Water trunk water mains and on adopted sewer infrastructure for pumped flows. Lining damage from impact during installation or from cavitation in service can expose the underlying steel, allowing localised corrosion. Repair typically involves spot rehabilitation or full replacement of the affected section.
