Mild steel pipe

Black uncoated steel pipe used for gas, heating and industrial drainage applications.

Mild steel pipe, often called black steel or carbon steel, is an uncoated ferrous pipe used primarily for natural gas distribution, heating systems and industrial drainage applications. UK installations comply with BS EN 10255 and Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 for gas work. The pipe is identifiable by its dull black exterior and threaded malleable iron fittings or welded joints. Mild steel is not generally used for foul or surface water drainage in modern UK practice, but is occasionally encountered on commercial premises for trade effluent runs from kitchens, garages and workshops. The material is prone to internal and external corrosion in moist conditions and should be inspected periodically for surface rust and pitting. Replacement typically involves stainless steel, HDPE or polypropylene depending on the application.
