LDPE pipe is a flexible, low-density polyethylene tubing commonly used for garden irrigation, livestock water troughs and minor non-pressure surface water applications. In a drainage context, LDPE is rarely a structural pipe but may be encountered as part of rainwater harvesting systems and bespoke garden drainage installations. Manufactured under BS EN 12201 and similar polyethylene standards, the pipe is supplied in coils and joined by barbed compression fittings rather than welded joints. LDPE is identifiable by its black or natural-clear appearance and softer feel compared with HDPE or MDPE. It is not approved for adopted drainage runs and should not be used as a permanent foul drain. UK homeowners may find LDPE behind older garden features installed by previous owners and should not assume it carries any drainage function.
