Polypropylene pipe

Heat-resistant plastic pipe used for above ground waste runs and laboratory drainage.

Polypropylene pipe is a heat-resistant plastic widely used for above ground waste runs from sinks, basins and washing machines, and for specialist applications such as laboratory and dental drainage. It tolerates higher discharge temperatures than PVC-U, making it suitable for kitchen connections handling boiling water. UK installations follow BS EN 1451 and Building Regulations Part H1. Joints are typically push-fit with rubber rings or, for chemical environments, butt-welded. Polypropylene is identifiable on inspection by its slightly translucent grey appearance and softer feel compared with rigid PVC-U. The material is fully recyclable and increasingly specified in commercial refits across central London. Common defects include joint pull-out under thermal expansion and slow leaks at compression joints where seals have hardened over time.
