PVC-U solvent-weld pipe

PVC-U pipe joined with solvent cement to form a permanent chemical weld at the socket.

PVC-U solvent-weld pipe is a variant joined using a specialist solvent cement that softens the mating surfaces of pipe and fitting, creating a permanent chemical bond once cured. The system is commonly used above ground for waste runs from sinks, basins and showers, and on internal soil stacks in flats and HMOs across London. UK installations follow BS EN 1329 and Building Regulations Part H1. Solvent-weld joints provide a rigid connection that cannot be disassembled, which is useful for concealed pipework but inconvenient for repair. The pipe is identifiable on inspection by the absence of socket rubber rings and by the visible glue line at each joint. Improperly cured joints can fail under thermal cycling, occasionally producing slow leaks behind boxed-in pipework.
