ABS pipe

Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic pipe used for solvent-weld waste runs.

ABS pipe, made from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, is a rigid black thermoplastic used for above ground solvent-weld waste runs in domestic and light commercial buildings. The material is impact resistant at low temperatures and tolerant of both hot discharges and mild chemical exposure, making it a common choice for utility room and external waste applications. UK installations comply with BS EN 1455 and Building Regulations Part H1. ABS is identifiable by its consistent satin black finish and chemically bonded joints that cannot be disassembled. While durable, prolonged UV exposure on external pipework can cause surface chalking and embrittlement, particularly on south-facing London elevations. Repairs typically involve cutting out the affected section and solvent-welding a slip coupling rather than attempting joint disassembly.
