MDPE pipe is a medium-density polyethylene material almost universally used for new cold water service mains in the UK, including connections between the public water main and properties across Greater London. The pipe is coloured blue for underground potable water and is supplied in 20mm, 25mm, 32mm and larger diameters under BS EN 12201. Joints are typically compression fittings or electrofusion, providing a fully sealed connection that meets Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. While not a drainage product, MDPE is often encountered alongside drainage works during property extensions, particularly where a new kitchen or bathroom requires a water main upgrade. Black MDPE is sometimes used for non-potable supplies. The pipe is flexible and tolerant of minor ground movement but vulnerable to damage during excavation.
