Copper pipe

Traditional copper pipe used for hot and cold water supply and historic above ground wastes.

Copper pipe is a traditional UK plumbing material used predominantly for hot and cold water supply, central heating and historic above ground waste connections. Manufactured to BS EN 1057 in 15mm, 22mm, 28mm and larger diameters, copper is joined by capillary soldered, brazed or compression fittings. The material is identifiable by its distinctive reddish-brown colour, which develops a green oxide patina with age and exposure. While not generally specified for new drainage runs, copper waste pipes remain in service in many older London flats and conversions. Copper is durable and recyclable but vulnerable to pinhole corrosion in aggressive water and stress-cracking at poorly supported bends. Replacement is usually considered during bathroom refurbishment, with copper retained on supply and PVC-U or polypropylene used for new waste runs.
