Vitrified clay pipe

Fired clay drainage pipe widely used in UK foul drainage for over a century.

Vitrified clay pipe is a traditional drainage material made from fired clay, common across the UK since the Victorian period and still specified today under BS EN 295. The pipe has a smooth glazed interior that resists chemical attack and abrasion, making it well suited to foul drainage runs. Vitrified clay is the dominant material found in pre-1970s housing across Camden, Islington, Hackney and Westminster. While durable, the pipe is brittle and prone to cracked sockets, displaced joints and root ingress where rigid joints have failed. On a CCTV drain survey, clay pipe is identifiable by its tan or grey colour and ribbed socket joints. Replacement is generally considered when relining is no longer cost effective, often after recurring blockages or pipe collapse.
