Lead pipe (legacy)

Historic lead pipe used for water supply and waste in pre-1970s London property.

Lead pipe is a legacy plumbing material widely installed in pre-1970s UK housing for cold water supply, basin wastes and short soil stack sections. In London, lead supply pipes remain common in Victorian terraces across Camden, Islington, Westminster and surrounding boroughs. Lead presents a known health concern because it can leach into drinking water, particularly in soft water areas and where water has been standing overnight. The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 and HSE guidance recommend full replacement of lead supply pipes with MDPE where practical, often part-funded by Thames Water under their lead replacement scheme. Lead waste pipes pose a lower health risk but should be replaced during refurbishment. The material is identifiable by its dull grey appearance, soft feel and characteristic swaged or wiped joints.
