Cesspit replacement involves decommissioning an existing cesspit and installing either a new compliant cesspit, a septic tank with drainage field, or a small package sewage treatment plant. Modern cesspits sold in the UK must comply with BS EN 12566-1 and have minimum capacity of 18,000 litres for a single household. Where ground conditions allow, an upgrade to a treatment plant is often preferred as it greatly reduces emptying costs. Discharge from a treatment plant requires a general binding rule under the Environmental Permitting Regulations or a bespoke permit from the Environment Agency. Works typically take one to two weeks, depending on size, access and any concurrent groundworks, and should be carried out by an installer accredited to BS 6297 design principles.
