Septic tank replacement

Removal of an old septic tank and installation of a compliant new tank or treatment plant.

Septic tank replacement is the removal of an old or failed septic tank and installation of either a new tank or, more commonly, a package sewage treatment plant. Since 2020 in England, septic tanks discharging directly to a watercourse have not complied with the Environment Agency General Binding Rules, which has driven many upgrades. New treatment plants must comply with BS EN 12566-3 and be installed to manufacturer's instructions with an appropriate drainage field designed in accordance with BS 6297. Soakaway tests should be carried out before specifying the field. Replacement works typically take three to seven days on site, and a percolation test should always pre-date excavation to avoid installing a system that cannot perform as intended.
