CSCS card (Construction Skills)

UK construction industry certification card showing site safety and trade qualifications.

A CSCS card, issued by the Construction Skills Certification Scheme, is the UK construction industry's primary on-site verification that an operative has the relevant health and safety knowledge and trade qualifications for their role. Cards range from Labourer (green) to Manager (black), with specific trade cards including those for drainage and plumbing operatives. Most major construction sites across London, including Thames Water frameworks and Tideway Tunnel works, require valid CSCS cards as a condition of access. Practical implications for contractors include the need to obtain the appropriate card category, which typically requires the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test and a recognised qualification or trade competence. The scheme is regularly referenced alongside CDM Regulations 2015 compliance. For private domestic works the CSCS card is not statutorily required but is widely cited as evidence of professional competence.
