A detached house is a self-contained single dwelling with no shared walls, typically standing in its own plot with private drainage runs to the public sewer or onsite treatment system. In North London suburbs such as Barnet, Enfield and parts of Harrow, detached homes are common in interwar and postwar developments where each property has its own foul and surface water connections. Drainage characteristics often include longer pipe runs, separate stacks for each soil branch and dedicated soakaways for rainwater where ground conditions allow. Common issues include blockages on extended lateral drains and root ingress from mature garden trees. Because there are no shared drains with neighbouring properties, responsibility for repairs is usually clear-cut, although lateral drains beyond the boundary still fall to Thames Water for maintenance.
