A drain milling robot is a specialist version of a robotic cutter equipped with diamond, tungsten or steel milling heads to grind away hard intrusions such as concrete spillage, displaced lateral connections, hardened scale and protruding fittings. The unit is fed from an umbilical with hydraulic or pneumatic drive and an integrated CCTV camera streams to the operator on the surface. Milling robots are typically used after CIPP lining to reinstate lateral connections, or to prepare a pipe for lining by removing obstructions that would otherwise tear the liner. They suit pipe diameters from 100mm up to 800mm and are commonly deployed on Thames Water sewer rehabilitation contracts. Operators must follow PUWER 1998, manufacturer training requirements and project-specific risk assessments for confined space avoidance.
