A drain robotic cutter is a remotely controlled tracked or wheeled unit fitted with a high-speed milling head used to cut roots, hardened concrete intrusions, lateral protrusions and lining material from inside a drain. The operator views the work through an integrated camera and steers the cutter from a control unit on the surface, typically inside the works van. Robotic cutters are widely used to reopen lateral connections after CIPP relining, where the liner has sealed across the junction. They are also valuable for clearing intrusions in larger Thames Water adopted sewers without entering as confined space. Operators require manufacturer-specific training and engineers must follow HSE PUWER 1998 and the Confined Space Regulations 1997 where remote working is being used as a control measure.
