Drain run

Continuous length of drain pipe between two access points such as inspection chambers.

A drain run is a continuous section of pipework laid between two access points, such as a soil stack base and an inspection chamber, or between two manholes. Each run is designed with a uniform gradient, diameter and material so that flows remain self-cleansing and access for maintenance is straightforward. UK Building Regulations Part H requires access at every change of direction, junction or gradient that cannot be cleared from the next available point. Drain runs are surveyed using CCTV cameras pushed or driven along the pipe between chambers, producing a recorded inspection report. Common defects identified within a run include cracks, displaced joints, root ingress, fat deposits and infiltration. The length of an individual run is typically limited by the maximum rodding distance for the pipe diameter in use.
