An inspection chamber is a shallower and smaller access point installed on private drainage, typically less than 1 metre deep, that allows rodding, jetting and CCTV inspection without confined space entry. Modern UK inspection chambers are usually moulded plastic with a 450mm shaft and are required by Building Regulations Part H at every change of direction, junction or gradient that cannot otherwise be cleared. Covers must be sealed against odours where chambers are within a building and rated for vehicular loading where installed on driveways. Older Victorian properties often have brick-built chambers with stoneware channels and Y-junctions visible inside. Inspection chambers are the primary access used during routine drain surveys and clearance work, making their location and condition important for ongoing maintenance.
