Access cover

Removable lid over a manhole or inspection chamber providing surface entry to the drain.

An access cover is the removable lid that closes the top of a manhole or inspection chamber, allowing the drain to be reopened for inspection and maintenance. UK access covers are manufactured to BS EN 124, which sets out loading classes from A15 for pedestrian areas to F900 for airport pavements. In domestic settings, classes A15 and B125 are common, while D400 covers are specified for adopted roads and busy car parks. Materials include ductile iron, cast iron and composite polymers, with sealed and recessed options used internally to keep odours contained. Damaged or sunken covers are a common trip hazard in London streets and should be replaced promptly. Some Victorian properties retain original decorative cast iron covers, which may be subject to listed building consent in conservation areas.
