A composite manhole cover is a lightweight non-metallic chamber lid manufactured from glass-fibre reinforced plastic, polymer concrete or thermoset composite material. Made to BS EN 124, composite covers offer comparable load ratings to cast iron in classes A15 to D400 but at significantly reduced weight, making them easier to handle and free from scrap metal theft risk. They are identifiable by their consistent grey or black moulded appearance and integral non-slip patterns. Composite covers are widely specified in pedestrianised areas, footpaths and private drives across Greater London new builds, particularly where Manual Handling Regulations 1992 compliance during installation and maintenance is a key consideration. The covers do not corrode and are dimensionally stable, although surface wear under heavy traffic can be more visible than on cast iron. Replacement covers must match the frame profile and load rating exactly.
