Manhole cover replacement is the removal of a damaged, corroded or non-compliant inspection chamber cover and frame, and installation of a new unit appropriate to its loading class. Covers are classified under BS EN 124 from A15 (light pedestrian) up to F900 (heavy industrial), and the correct class must be selected to match the location, including pavement, driveway, carriageway or service yard. Frames are bedded on a mortar haunch or proprietary bedding system and the cover seated to give a level, rock-free finish. Replacement is normally a half-day job per cover, including breakout, bedding and reinstatement of surrounding surfacing. In London highway locations, replacement also requires a Section 50 licence and may need traffic management for safe working.
