A cast iron manhole cover is a traditional ferrous lid over a drainage chamber, manufactured to BS EN 124 in load classes from A15 for pedestrian areas to D400 for trafficked highways. Cast iron offers high strength, long service life and a distinctive appearance that suits heritage streetscapes across central London. The covers are identifiable by their patterned non-slip surface and characteristic ringing sound when tapped. Many Victorian properties retain original decorative cast iron covers from manufacturers such as Hayward or Broads, which may be subject to listed building consent in conservation areas. Replacement cast iron covers remain available in heritage patterns where matching is required. Common defects include cracking under heavy vehicle loading, theft for scrap metal value and frame settlement leading to rocking. Sunken or damaged covers should be replaced promptly to avoid trip hazards.
