Dual-flush mechanism

Cistern fitting offering two flush volumes for liquid and solid waste to save water.

A dual-flush mechanism allows a toilet user to choose between a full flush, typically 6 litres, and a reduced flush, typically 3 or 4 litres, depending on the waste being cleared. It is a key water saving feature included in new UK toilets to support compliance with Building Regulations Part G and the Water Supply Fittings Regulations 1999. The mechanism is usually operated by a two-section push button on the top of the cistern that lifts the flush valve to different heights. Dual-flush mechanisms can develop subtle leaks where the flush valve seal degrades, resulting in continuous trickling into the pan that can waste significant volumes of water. Periodic inspection and replacement of the flush valve seal is a routine maintenance task for property managers and homeowners alike.
