Frozen pipe emergency

Emergency thawing and repair of frozen pipes, common during December to February freeze events.

A frozen pipe emergency is a callout for thawing and assessing pipes that have frozen during cold weather, with risk of bursting on thaw. Most common during December to February freeze events affecting external pipework, lofts, garages and unheated spaces. Across Greater London, freeze events typically peak in January and February when sustained sub-zero temperatures affect exposed pipework. Before the engineer arrives, occupants should turn off the water supply at the stop tap, locate the frozen section if possible (often externally), avoid using direct flame to thaw, and place buckets ready in case of burst on thaw. The service includes safe controlled thawing using thermal blankets or warm water, pressure testing for cracks, and repair or replacement of any damaged sections. Buildings insurance typically covers thaw-related burst damage under 'freezing' cover.
