A macerator failure refers to the breakdown of a small pump used to lift and discharge waste from a WC or shower located below the main drain run, typically in a basement, loft conversion or rear extension. Saniflo is the best known brand in the UK. Failures arise from worn impellers, blocked outlet pipes, foreign objects damaging the cutting blades and electrical issues with the pressure switch or motor. Symptoms include continuous running, failure to discharge and unpleasant smells around the unit. Engineers usually address common causes by isolating the supply, draining the chamber, clearing the unit and replacing worn parts in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Manufacturers' guidance and Building Regulations Part H1 require that a gravity WC remains accessible elsewhere in the property as a backup.
