Mud gully

Gully with a deep sump designed to collect silt and mud before the main drain.

A mud gully is a heavy duty drainage gully with a particularly deep sump designed to retain silt, mud and grit from highway and yard run-off before clean water continues into the drain. These gullies are widely used on rural roads, construction site accesses and industrial yards across the UK, where surface flows can carry significant solids. Outflow occurs over a weir above the sump so that settled material stays in place between cleans. UK highway authority specifications include mud gullies in line with the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges. Regular emptying by vacuum tanker is essential to maintain capacity, particularly in autumn and after periods of heavy rainfall. Neglected mud gullies are a frequent cause of localised flooding on country lanes and rural commercial premises.
