Yard gully

Surface drainage point in yards and paved areas connecting run-off to the drain.

A yard gully is a surface drainage point installed in yards, courtyards, alleyways and other paved external areas to collect rainwater and incidental wastewater. It typically consists of a stoneware or PVC body with an integral trap and a heavy duty metal grating set into a concrete surround. The trap maintains a water seal preventing foul air from rising out of the drain, while the grating retains larger debris. UK Building Regulations Part H3 and BS EN 752 require surface water collection from paved areas to be designed for expected rainfall intensities. Yard gullies are common at the rear of London terraces and behind commercial premises. Regular cleaning of the grating and trap reduces the risk of localised flooding during heavy rain.
