Oil spillage drainage

Emergency response to oil spills entering drainage, with interceptor checks and EA notification.

Oil spillage drainage response is the emergency intervention when oil enters drainage systems, with risk of pollution to watercourses and the marine environment. Common scenarios include vehicle leaks on commercial forecourts, heating oil leaks at properties with above-ground tanks, and equipment failures in industrial premises. Before responders arrive, site staff should contain the spill with absorbent booms or pads, prevent further oil reaching drains, and identify the oil type and volume. The service includes containment, removal of contaminated water by vacuum tanker, interceptor inspection and emptying if relevant, drain cleaning, and notification of the Environment Agency for significant spills (over 25 litres or affecting watercourses). Why this matters: even small oil spills cause widespread environmental damage. Forecourt operators must hold and execute spill response plans under their environmental permits, with documented evidence of training and exercises.
