A petrol interceptor is a specialised multi-chamber drainage system installed on petrol filling station forecourts, vehicle workshops and similar sites to separate petrol, oil and silt from surface water run-off before it enters the public sewer or watercourse. Surface flows pass through a sequence of chambers in which solids settle and lighter hydrocarbons rise to the surface to be retained. UK installations must comply with the Environmental Permitting Regulations and PPG3 guidance from the Environment Agency. Class 1 separators, designed to BS EN 858, are typically required where discharge is to surface water. Regular emptying and maintenance by a licensed waste contractor are needed to keep capacity within acceptable limits. Failure to maintain forecourt interceptors can result in pollution incidents and significant regulatory penalties.
