Petrol station forecourt

Fuel filling forecourt with petrol interceptor and strict environmental drainage controls.

A petrol station forecourt is the fuel dispensing area at a service station, subject to strict environmental controls on surface water drainage due to spillage risk. Across Greater London, forecourts are operated by major brands and independent retailers in every borough. Drainage characteristics include forecourt gullies connected via a class 1 full retention petrol interceptor (compliant with BS EN 858) before discharge to the surface water sewer or watercourse, plus separate foul drainage from the kiosk WCs and catering area. Common issues include interceptor saturation requiring emergency tanker emptying, blockages from forecourt litter and silt, and pollution incidents from major fuel spills. Operators must maintain interceptors under their environmental permit, hold spill response plans and notify the Environment Agency of any significant incident. Annual integrity testing of the interceptor is typically required.
