Open-cut excavation

Traditional drain repair by digging a trench down to and along the pipe.

Open-cut excavation is the traditional method of accessing drainage pipework by digging a trench down to the pipe along its length. It is used where full pipe replacement is needed, where pipework has collapsed beyond the capacity of trenchless methods, or where the depth and access conditions make a no-dig approach uneconomic. Works must comply with HSE guidance on excavation safety, with shoring or battered sides for trenches over 1.2 metres deep, and with CDM 2015 duties on planning, supervision and reinstatement. In London, additional permits are required for works in the highway, in conservation areas and near to trees with TPOs. New pipework must be installed in accordance with BS EN 1610, including bedding, surround material and air or water testing before backfill.
