Pipe bursting

Trenchless replacement method that breaks the old pipe and pulls a new one through.

Pipe bursting is a trenchless replacement technique in which a conical bursting head is pulled through the old pipe, fracturing it outwards into the surrounding soil while drawing a new HDPE or PVC pipe in behind. The method allows like-for-like or upsized replacement without excavating the full length of the run, with only entry and exit pits required. It is particularly useful where the host pipe is too collapsed or deformed for CIPP lining to be installed. Pipe bursting works well on clay and concrete drains but is not suitable near other shallow services or ground-supported structures, as the displaced ground can cause settlement. The work must comply with BS EN ISO 11295 and any Thames Water requirements for adopted sewer rehabilitation.
