Sanitary product blockage

Drain blockage caused by sanitary towels, tampons or applicators flushed down a toilet.

Sanitary product blockages are caused by items such as sanitary towels, tampons, panty liners and applicators being flushed down a WC rather than disposed of in a bin. These products are designed to absorb and retain liquid, swelling significantly in water and forming dense plugs that catch easily at bends, junctions and minor irregularities in the drain. In London they contribute substantially to wider fatberg formation when combined with wet wipes and congealed fats. Engineers usually address common causes by mechanical clearance, high pressure water jetting and a CCTV inspection in accordance with BS EN 13508-2 to confirm the line is clear. Provision of a small lidded bin in every bathroom remains the most effective preventive step, and clear guidance from landlords and property managers is helpful in shared and rental accommodation.
