Leaves blockage in drain

Surface water drain blocked by accumulated leaves and garden debris, particularly in autumn.

A leaves blockage is a common autumn issue affecting surface water drains, gullies and roof outlets in London streets with established trees. Fallen leaves, twigs, fruit and seed pods collect at the grating of gullies and downpipe leaf guards, then wash into the drainage system during heavy rain. Once inside, the debris can mat together at bends, junctions and outlet grilles, restricting flow and causing localised flooding on driveways, paths and lawns. Engineers usually address common causes by clearing gullies, jetting affected lengths and replacing damaged leaf guards. Building Regulations Part H3 covers surface water drainage in new and altered work. Regular autumn maintenance, including raking leaves away from gullies and clearing gutters and downpipes, remains the most effective preventive measure for both homeowners and property managers.
