A sump pump is a small submersible pump installed in a sump pit, typically in a cellar, basement or below-ground car park, that automatically lifts water away when it reaches a set level. It is widely used to manage groundwater seepage, surface water ingress and occasional plumbing leaks in low-lying parts of UK buildings. Most sump pumps are controlled by an integral float switch and discharge through a small bore pipe to an external gully or surface water drain. UK installations should follow Building Regulations Part C and Part H and use a non-return valve to prevent backflow. In basement conversions across central London, sump pumps are often combined with a perimeter drainage channel as part of a wider waterproofing system designed by a qualified specialist.
