A drainage channel is a long linear gully with a continuous grating that collects surface water across paved areas such as driveways, patios, garage entrances and pedestrian zones. The channel discharges into the main surface water drain at one or both ends via an outlet sump. UK manufacturers offer pre-formed polymer concrete or stainless steel channels with gratings rated from A15 for pedestrian use up to F900 for heavy industrial loading under BS EN 1433. Drainage channels are widely used at the threshold of garage conversions and basement light wells to control surface water before it can enter the property. Channels need regular cleaning to keep gratings and outlet sumps free from leaves and silt, particularly in autumn and after heavy storms.
