A drainage channel block is a precast concrete, polymer concrete or stainless steel linear channel laid across driveways, yards and paved areas to intercept surface water run-off. The channel collects rainfall across its full length and discharges to the drainage system via a sump or outlet at one end. UK installations follow BS EN 1433, which sets out load classes from A15 for pedestrian areas to F900 for airport pavements. In domestic and light commercial applications across London, polymer concrete channels with cast iron or stainless steel grates are widely used. The system is particularly useful at driveway thresholds where Building Regulations Part H3 and SuDS guidance require that surface water does not flow onto the highway. Regular cleaning of the grates and underlying channel maintains hydraulic capacity, especially after autumn leaf fall.
